We are sure that most evaluators have muttered some choice evaluative terms at a photocopier that refuses to perform according to expectations.
But some of you may not be aware that these utterings – even if they occur silently inside your mind – actually affect the performance of the photocopier.
This helpful notice was found in the office of a client:
WARNING!
This machine is subject to breakdown during periods of critical need.
A special circuit in the machine called the ‘critical detector’ senses the operator’s emotional state in terms of how desperate he or she is to use the machine.
The ‘critical detector’ then creates a malfunction proportional to the desperation of the operator.
Threatening the machine with violence only aggravates the situation.
Likewise, attempts to use another machine may cause it to malfunction. They belong to the same union.
Keep cool and say nice things to the machine. Nothing else seems to work.
Never let anything mechanical
know you are in a hurry.

Why is there a “coin slot” at the far left? Makes it even funnier!
Opps! Far right…
LOL! Just to clarify, this was not the actual photocopier in the clients office that had this notice next to it, just a free-to-share pic for the blog post!
Chris, surely you are not too young to remember the good old days of having to pay for photocopies at the library or convenience store, with coins rather than cards?
